Harlem Gospel Ensemble, founded and directed by Du’Bois A’Keen, is a professional performing choir rooted in the rich tradition of Black gospel music while carrying its legacy into contemporary spaces around the world. With an expansive repertoire spanning traditional gospel, spirituals, contemporary Christian music, and original works, the ensemble presents regular performances through the Harlem Gospel Series while collaborating across dance, theater, visual art, and concert stages.
The ensemble has been featured in collaborations with visionary artists including Carrie Mae Weems at Lincoln Center’s Contested Sites of Memory, as well as Craig Harris, Nona Hendryx, Carl Hancock Rux, and others. Blending sacred tradition with contemporary artistry, Harlem Gospel Ensemble brings the sound, spirit, and cultural resonance of Harlem to audiences across the globe.
“Gospel Through the Ages” is a musical journey through the rich history and evolving tradition of gospel music. The program traces the genre’s enduring legacy through beloved classics, contemporary favorites, and original works, celebrating the voices, composers, and communities that have shaped its sound.
Audiences will experience iconic selections such as Richard Smallwood’s Total Praise, alongside original compositions and arrangements by composer and artistic director Du’Bois A’Keen. The evening concludes with inspiring contemporary Christian anthems that affirm the ongoing vitality of the gospel tradition.
