Music at St. Paul’s: Music from East & West

Free and open to the public; no tickets needed. KEYIN LOU was born in Hangzhou, China, in 1994. Her music combines her Western musical education with her Chinese cultural upbringing. Her works focus on the coexistence of the melodic and the academic. From the age of 4, she studied piano under Liangyu Xu. At the age of 11, she was admitted to the middle school of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and studied composition under renowned Professor Ying Ding. In 2008, while still in middle school, the Shanghai Little Star Art Chorus published and distributed her Olympic children's song series, including “Dad Is a Torchbearer” and “I Was Planting Flowers for the Olympics.” In 2009, her work “A Song of Silence” won the Silver Medal of the American Golden Key International Composer Contest. In 2010, her vocal work “Moon” was published in the largest Chinese academic music magazine, “Music Creation.” In 2012, she was admitted to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music both in classical composition and music engineering. She chose to study music engineering and studied under the famous music producer Professor Dong An. She won numerous People’s Scholarships because of her outstanding achievements. In 2014, she participated in the production of the popular Chinese television program “Sing My Song (Song of China),” and served as music editor and assistant to the music director. In 2016, Lou graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She then decided to attend the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied under the famous composer and educator Dr. Marjorie Merryman. In 2016, she collaborated with Manhattan’s new music group to compose “The Color” for flute, viola, and piano. In Oct 2018, she had a concert at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, with Chinese female composer Yuexiang Xu. This concert has also been included in the support project of China National Literature and Art Foundation Aesthetic Development Fund. In March 2019, Keyin began to collaborate with American composer Julian Bennett Holmes. They started a music series called “Music from East & West.” JULIAN BENNETT HOLMES is an award-winning composer and theorist, serving as Sacred Music Coordinator for Columbia University and teaching undergraduate courses at the Manhattan School of Music. He studied with Lowell Liebermann and Richard Danielpour, and is pursuing a doctorate at the Manhattan School of Music with Marjorie Merryman. As a teenager, he toured internationally, playing in experimental bands. He has won prizes including the Society for New Music Israel/Pellman Award, the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester Young Composer Competition, the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Composers Award, and the Second Prize at the Seventh International Antonín Dvorák Composition Competition.
