Sacred Music at Columbia: Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury & Rez Abbasi — Concert and Discussion of Music & Religion

Free and open to the public; no tickets needed. INDRAJIT ROY-CHOWDHURY and REZ ABBASI will perform on the Common Ground series. Each player will perform a solo set, followed by an on-stage discussion of music and religion. Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury is one of the most talented young exponents of Rampur Senia Gharana in the venerated lineage of, Pandit Birendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury and Pandit Subroto Roy Chowdhury. Primarily trained in the Veen-Kar style of Sitar which draws techniques and idioms of the Veena, Indrajit has been able to carve a niche for himself with his eclecticism and versatility. Indrajit strives for a fine balance of traditionalism coupled with innovation and is renowned for his meditative alaap and brilliant taans. Voted #1 Rising Star Guitarist in the 2013 DownBeat Critics Poll and placed in the "top-ten Guitarists" in 2015's poll, Rez Abbasi continues to push boundaries. 
 Born in Karachi, Pakistan, removed at the age of four to the vastness of South- ern California, schooled at the University of Southern California and the Manhattan School of Music in jazz and classical music, along with a pilgrimage in India under the tutelage of master percussionist, Ustad Alla Rakha, Rez Abbasi is a vivid synthesis of all the above stated influences and genres.
